A rescue pittie with a questionable background who was afraid of a lot of things and had been prevented from interacting with humans because of her reactive-looking behavior, thus making her more reactive. Cleo is not reactive or aggressive. She just needed to be built up! Kim decided to leave the baggage of the past in the past and focus on freedom & play. Keep it simple! Now we have a really solid foundation to work on all the great obedience stuff super easy! We just posted this full session on YouTube, but you should compare it to lesson 1.

Bear & Chevy’s mom said something along the lines of “If you would have told me this would’ve gone this way, I wouldn’t have believed you.”

To a certain extent, every behavioral case is like an experiment. There’s a sample and a control.

The sample is the nuances of why those particular dogs are reactive or aggressive, what they respond to better for freedom and play, and how much of a correction they might need when we decide to have that conversation.

The “control” is the litmus test that ensures that everything within our control is being worked: crating when unsupervised, biological fulfillment as a daily decision, and payments and punishments at the appropriate times.

I just wanted to shout out these two humans for their hard work. If a dog trainer doesn’t give the reactive dog a chance to throw down, they’re not doing their job.

Today, Mila earned her stripes and kicked Chevy’s ass. He learned not to write checks he cannot cash. There was blood 🩸This may be an unpopular opinion but if you’re always working dogs thru prevention and under threshold, you’re preparing them for nothing - a world that has no distractions, stressors, or consequences. By then end of the session, Chevy was sniffing and laying next to Mila all on his own.

Radnor and Beau had a blast playing today. Today’s session started off with a single aversive punishment for Beau losing his mind at the door, he redirected *himself* to the couch where he received pets from me, and then we were cool and the arousal was all gone.

Very shortly we talked about the nature of the ecollar and the communication system, and then we were ready for action.

I just am so proud of these families for their dedication to their dogs happiness and emotional state!

I have probably changed a lot in my perspectives on structured walking, loose leash walking, heel, and free walking.

I think today, it doesn’t really matter if your dog walks in front of you or beside you as long as they’re not pulling or dragging you.

It’s a human construct in the sense that the dog needs to stay close, but it’s also a dog construct in the sense that it turns on that pack drive. But she knows I’m not a dog…

Annie had gotten to the point that she was pulling a LOT, so we did one little 4 min session where I delivered one aversive punishment for forging.

She didn’t just stop forging, she started checking in alittle more and stopped the constant side switching.

@cochrank9training posted a really helpful infographic the other day about how punishment leaves open a space for the dog to redirect and offer on their own. I’ve said it for years, but I love the way he put it.

Anyway, if you’re wondering how you should walk your dog, I think it depends a lot on environment and personal preference, as long as you’re moving in confidence, competence, and with clarity.

Take them outside and play fetch and chase in your fenced yard and let them see you not putting any relevance on them. Watch them look how you’re reacting and just learning that it doesn’t matter. Dogs are resilient, intelligent, and way better at coping than we are. Stop the bullshit coddling.

I listened to a really fantastic podcast today from @trainlikeivan about low level ecollar use, and it made me want to trash my entire ecollar curriculum.

I think there’s a movement in balanced training to try to make the ecollar seem like we’re never going to use it as punishment. This is a lie.

I think even until recently I have used the ecollar pressure and leash pressure as a crutch instead of seeing what motivates the dog. It is not a shortcut, and if I am using it as such, it’s crap training.

Lots to think about, as I really appreciate guys like Ivan and Larry @larrykrohn for putting out material on the topic so that trainers know how to teach the dog, the owners, and other trainers the conditioning, reasoning, and ethics behind using it, respectively.

How do I know if there’s trust? There is a reflexive (muscle memory) response to the market that goes from voluntary, nearly to involuntary.

Honestly I spend the whole board and train making sure this is solid. Adding in the tools is effective only when this foundation is well built.

Radnor’s parents are amazing people who have been navigating the socialization landscape the last couple of years.

Radnor and her dad were chased down and accosted by an asshole with an out of control off leash dog.

They’ve avoided dog parks for all the obvious reasons, so how do you socialize a dog?

You give them opportunities to be awkward around pups and solid helper dogs, and let them handle the rest.

Get out of their way.

We recently announced a new Stay & Train Program that is available immediately at a reduced price. This program allows your dog to stay in the comfort of their own home, still taking adventures to the park, and bringing friends over for play time. This allows us to incorporate the socialization from the typical board and train without having to pay a facility for boarding, which we still offer as well. We can cover the same amount of modules in the same amount of time, and I will only book 2 at a time. I have committed to staying small with little overhead, and this is something I have done many times now with excellent results :) Stay & Trains will be limited to the Spring Hill, Thompsons Station, or South Franklin areas for now.

I saw a sign that said if it was 77 degrees it was 127 degrees on the asphalt. This was just a lie. It’s 93 today, and I would gladly walk on this sidewalk for a mile or two. I don’t! But I would.

My reasoning for teaching place has changed drastically over the last year.

The way I used to teach it was as a prevention for naughty behaviors like counter surfing, barking at the door, and separation anxiety. Not that thats the worst thing in the world.

Today I teach place to confirm that the dog and owner are using the same communication system.

I need them to be able to move together (structured walking), be still together (rest), the dog move independently of the owner (free, play & recall), and for the owner to be able to move independently of the dog (place / implied stay).

If I have that in low distraction, my goal is to bring it out into the real world where shit can pop off without notice.

I sped this up 1.4x to capture the whole play session which lasted only about 4 mins. It was 90 degrees out today so I have a five minute limit for dogs when it’s like this. Also notice that the markers I am using are the same as the YoYo game.
